Spring is in the air and Summer is quickly approaching. Lavender by the Bay is open for the season and ready to welcome visitors!

Since 2011, we have been hard at work expanding our fields, preparing potted plants for your garden and creating new sachets for our shop.  We now have 15 acres planted with lavender.  Both our mature and baby plants are growing strong; this season should be a spectacular one!

Lavender by the Bay is not only a picturesque place to visit, we are also a working farm. We harvest the lavender for drying while in their bloom. You will see bunches hanging in our shop drying.  Also, our bees and bee hives need tending so you can enjoy our delicious honey.

If you are planning to visit during the peak bloom, our English lavender usually blooms mid-to-late June, followed by our lavandins (French lavender) peaking in early July.

Due to the milder weather this season, blooms could arrive two weeks earlier.  Keep an eye on the website for updates so you can plan your visit accordingly.

If you are visiting on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or a major holiday during the bloom time, please keep in mind that time spent in the field is limited to 20 minutes due to a limited number of parking spots available. Visits to the farm during the week can be more leisurely. You will have more time to stroll around the designated areas, visit our shop, take advantage of u-pick bunches and perhaps enjoy your picnic lunch while viewing the beautiful purple haze and savoring the aromatic delights of our lavender.

If you are a professional photographer interested in using our farm please email us for rates and more information.

We look forward to seeing you this season.

Due to the damage from the recent hurricane our second bloom has been cut short.  While we still have some fresh lavender available, the field is not as spectacular as we were hoping.  Our hearts and prayers go out to those who were negatively impacted by the hurricane.  We wish all a quick recovery.

Spring showers mean lavender flowers!
We have been busy busy at the farm preparing for the exciting 2011 season. 16,000 new lavender plants are being added to our fields. The harsh winter has been tough on our bees but a new supply of bees from Georgia have started to feel at home and are already hard at work. If they keep up the good work we hope to have spring honey by mid June and lavender honey by the end of July.

We will be reopening Saturday, April 30th and open weekends only during the month of May from 9AM -5PM. Starting in June we will be open 7 days a week through the end of September. We have a large supply of lavender plants for sale both indoor and outdoor.
We expect our English lavender to be in bloom mid to late June. Our lavandins usually begin blooming the beginning of July.

See you all soon!

September 28th, 2010
It is hard to believe that the summer is over.  It has been a wonderful 2010 season.  Our flowers bloomed to perfection, although two weeks early.  Our honey was sweet and plentiful.

We want to thank all of our visitors, both new and old, for helping to make it a great summer.  We loved  all your compliments and successful planting stories as well as those of you who needed a little extra planting advice.

We hope to remain open 7 days a week through October and weekends in November. Our Fall hours are 9:30-5:00 weather permitting.

We will continue to sell at the NYC Greenmarkets weather permitting. See Green Market Schedule for locations.

Happy Fall to All

Do you offer to sell plants and mail them out? I would love to get some from you as we used to live in Kings Park,NY and now live in Ohio. Gardening is harder here with the clay soil. Have to amend it so much . I have some lavender plants Munstead and Hidecoat but I didn`t know you were supposed to cut them back every year and now they have alot of woodsy bases. what can I do with them ? Can I get them back to fill out someway? they are very leggy. Healthy by not bushy like they should be.Can I cut them back in the fall and let them grow back in the spring?? Please help!! Love my lavender!! Want to make a walkway in the lot next to my house and going to make like an English garden. I will send picures if I get it fullfilles. I am a senior citizen,so time is precious. Love your websie, Marie

      Dear Marie,
Once a plant becomes leggy there’s not much you can do. You can cutback in the spring-time before new growth begins or in the fall after blooms have faded. Leave 2″-3″ of green growth. Do not cut back to the wood, that will kill the plant. You can also try burying some of the lower woody stems with soil, if they root you will have a new plant!
Unfortunately, we do not do mail order our plants. Thanks for visiting the website!

      Sincerely,
      Susan

My husband and I are heading your way in August. I can’t wait to drop by. I’m looking forward to getting some tips from the pros!!! :)

  7. Hi, I need to buy some dried lavenders. I was wondering when would they be available for sale? and also when’s the best time of the season to come for picture taking without getting interrupted by the bees? Thanks

    • susan on said:

We have dried lavender available at the farm. It is from our 2010 crop. If you want lavender from 2011 it should be available early or mid July.
Our bees are always active in the fields when the lavender is blooming. They are our “friends”. Without them we would not have any of our delicious lavender honey.
The best time to come to see the lavender is usually mid to late June and early to mid July. Please keep in mind that we are harvesting the lavender during this time
for our dried bunches and loose lavender.
We will be limiting the time you can spend in the fields during the weekends (Fri.-Sun.) of the bloom season to 20 minutes. We have a small parking lot and it fills up quickly.
During the week there is not time limit within reason.
Remember if you are a professional photographer you will need to contact us for more information.

When will your lavender honey be available? Thinking of taking a ride to your farm on the 4th of July. Will it be ready then? Shall we wait until the middle of July?

    • susan on said:

      Dear Jo Ann,
Our lavender honey is usually available mid to late July but it is not possible to say exactly when. It is up to our bees.
Feel free to call the farm later this month.
      Sincerely,
      Susan

Hi, I have visited this lavender once years ago while in school and I fell in love with it. Yet I missed the blooming season. I would like to come visit again. When is the blooming season end? Will it be too late to visit the farm during mid-July (around the 7/11-7/12)??
Also, is it possible I can arrange a small proposal at your Lavender farm?

    Thank you very much :-D

    • susan on said:

The lavender will still be in bloom on 7/11 but will be over by 7/23. We will be hard at work harvesting it to sell and dry during the peak bloom time. Please contact me again about your “small proposal” for more info.
      Sincerely,
      Susan

Hi. I plan to visit the farm on July 14. Will it be a good time to visit since the lavender is being harvested? What do you mean that the fields have limited views?

    Thanks.

    • susan on said:

      Greetings Kenneth and Jade,
We have a very limited time in which we can harvest our lavender so that we can dry it for bunches and loose lavender. A large portion of the field has been cut. We have left an area for cutting and an area for viewing and photographing.
The lavender has been blooming for a few weeks now and the colors are not as bright as before.
I am sure that you will still enjoy your time at the farm so come visit.
      Sincerely,
      Susan

Came across your site and didn’t know you were located here in Long Island, its looks beautiful I know in your newsletter says you are closed for the winter, when do you open so we can come.

    Thanks
    Victoria

    • Dear Victoria,
We are always happy when someone new discovers us. Will will reopen in May. Although our shop will reopen then keep in mind that our fields start
to bloom mid to late June and early July depending on the type of lavender. We also get a rebloom during the late summer early fall.
      Check back for updates.
      Come visit.
      Sincerely,
      Susan
